Hospital design is full of inefficiencies, namely poorly located amenities and facilities that require traveling all over the hospital complex to receive medical care. This travel is an abundant waste of patient and staff time and energy, In order to increase efficiency, it is best to first remove inefficiency. To alleviate  this, designers can locate facilities that relate together to close proximity with each other shortening travel distance, and wait times. This will both benefit communication between divisions and streamline the patients path through treatment. Other ways to boost efficiency through design is to arrange short term, day long treatments on the ground floor as to keep short visits contained away from areas where rest and calm are beneficial to recovery.  A simplified layout is easier for both staff and patients to navigate, as well as having the psychological benefit of reducing frustration. The common theme with improving hospital efficiency through design is to reduce the distance between linked services. This also has the added benefit of reducing risk of injury due to trips and falls, reducing insurance costs of the hospital while keeping the same number of staff.

Some hospitals have embraced more technological solutions by installing simple, user friendly, automatic check in kiosks that can be linked to a web version allowing patients can plan there check in ahead of arrival greatly reducing the initial time waiting for treatment. Another key use of technology being widely implemented is the conversion to digital medical records. By allowing patients to take control of there own healthcare, this can free up the trained healthcare workers to work on other tasks more suitable to their skills and training.

I want to find out if there is a better way to design Hospitals with the goal of making them more efficient? If so by what means can this be achieved and what is most cost effective?

The application of my research is to improve hospital experience for patient and staff, as well as getting the most effect for the dollar.

As a final product for my project I intent to have a list of recommendations and a improved design to present to the Royal Inland Hospital.

The contribution of my research project will be to anyone who uses hospitals, Through better design.  In doing so I hope to learn about the problems and solutions to designing building with complex occupation.

BLOG 4:

I intend to use the Royal inland hospital as a case study for how current widespread hospital design is inefficient and propose methods and designs with the aim to improve the efficiency. I will be focusing on ways to speed up patient treatment time, mainly by exploring options with better connected facilities shortening travel time and travel distance.

The main story that inspired me to this project is more about better management than actual design, Although still containing some design elements, I will require more information and examples of design solutions. I have yet to contact the hospital to see if and how a cooperative study and design may work.

This article points out the pros and cons of the hospital environment and or experience from the perspective of a practicing doctor, with work experience in several hospitals. In the article, The point is made that a hospital is not generally a place that people desire to be in, however this does not mean that it can not be designed to be more comfortable and pleasant for the patients, and hospital staff that do have to spend time in these building. The author suggests designs that “Rethink corridors and don’t let them be too long.” As well as promoting an open environment with open lobbies and use of natural lighting, while reducing noise and suggesting rurally located hospitals.

This Article describes the patient experience centered design of the Methodist Richardson Medical Center in Richardson Texas, USA. This hospital aims to be a model in modern hospital design by improving the hospital experience for not only the patients and staff, but for visitors with features such as convertible beds for friends and family of the patients and adding extra electrical outlets and USB outlets in waiting rooms. In order to further improve efficiency, closely linked disciplines and functions are located closely together, as to reduce travel and improve communication. “Good design can keep patients – customers – happy and willing to return, and it improves the work environment for employees and medical staff.” Neil Versel writes.

An interview by David Weinberg with Kent Rubach, on “lean management” techniques used in car manufacturing plants applied to hospitals. By applying the same management techniques found in assembly line manufacturing, the Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis and the Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle were able to shorten patient treatment times and greatly improve the efficiency of their hospitals reducing costs and improving staff and patient experience. Part of this process was to map out the path of treatment of various patients and then to reduce travel distance and make use of all possible space and time.

The Lean Management system has proven to excel at producing a variety of complex and vastly differing tasks by planning for even the minute and seemingly insignificant details. An article on how green spaces and gardens can quicken patient recovery. When green gardens were included in hospitals and intertwined with medical areas, it was noticed that patients required less time in recovery and requested less pain medications as well as slept better. By including these green areas and opening the recovery rooms up to the vegetated outside, patients reported higher satisfaction with their treatment.

BLOG 1.0

I am interested in the design and interactions of the built environment. It is my belief that good design is the key to creating successful and efficient structures and cities.

What interests me specifically is the design of homes and integration “green” technologies. I would like to learn more on how to better design building for their best use and efficiency.

One problem that i find interesting is the inefficiency of hospitals and the long wait times. A method to deal with this issue is by applying techniques developed in automobile manufacturing techniques, streamlining the patient’s experience through the hospital.
